Each year, Jacobs hosts work experience students throughout our offices in the UK to encourage them to pursue a career in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields. This presents a great opportunity for students to learn from the wide range of projects that Jacobs is involved with, along with our clients, that are shaping the world that the students live in. Typically, work experience involves the students coming into one of our offices and spending time with a mentor in either a single discipline or spending a week engaging with multiple different disciplines to learn about their careers, current projects and how they got there.
In response to the current situation Jacobs has developed a virtual work experience programme. The programme will centre around the design of a Coronavirus Vaccine research facility. We will introduce students into the wide range of people within the STEM fields that will come together to make this project a reality from architects and engineers through to project managers and safety specialists. In addition to focussing on the technical skills, we are also aiming to introduce students to some of the key skills they will need in the workplace in the 21st century such as creativity, team work, leadership and resilience.
