Meet the Team – Janine Marshall

24 August 2020

It’s time to meet the team behind North East Ambition at RTC and first up is Janine Marshall, Education Team Leader
Janine is a qualified trainer and an experienced facilitator who has delivered enterprise animation activities to encourage young people of all ages to consider STEM careers. She has worked on outreach activities covering a wide range of topics and, through this work, has developed a number of innovative tools to support idea generation and business startup.
  Janine Marshall

She has experience of engaging individuals and businesses who are particularly likely to face barriers when starting a business and offers a flexible approach to delivering workshops including face to face and online.

Janine’s enterprise and business background led her to developing a highly successful pre and new start business bootcamp which supported and lead potential and newly established companies through the first days of trading and then on to growing the business.

Janine has been working at RTC since 2008 when she joined to lead an innovation initiative aimed at young people and their teachers in the North East. This led to a variety of other enterprise and innovation programmes for both businesses and schools, and onto the STEM Ambassador and North East Ambition programmes currently run by her team today.

Working in the STEM field, Janine is aware of the many challenges facing businesses today and, in particular, women in the STEM workplace. In just a few years, Janine has grown her team from a staff of two, to five women, all with a variety of knowledge and skills that complement each other and allow the team to work successfully together.

Janine is a huge support to her staff. Her management style provides a nurturing ethos, allowing staff to feel supported and to develop and grow. Janine is more of a coach or mentor to her team and this allows all staff to feel valued and able to input into the team and its direction, creating a very inclusive ethos. She leads by example and is always first to volunteer to be part of new initiatives such as mentoring.

Janine is very keen on promoting women in all areas of business, in particular the STEM arena. She has actively encouraged staff to become involved in initiatives that support women in STEM and as a result the STEM Ambassador Hub North East team holds the role of secretary for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) group. In addition, two members of the team are trained to deliver People Like Me, a programme specifically designed to encourage young girls to consider STEM as a viable career option.
