Jen is a Chartered Science teacher with 10 years of experience teaching in North East secondary schools. Jen is specifically experienced in teaching in some of the most deprived areas of the North East. The first in her family to go to university and a woman working in STEM, Jen understands the challenges and obstacles facing young people and the factors that influence their career decisions. She is dedicated to enhancing and enriching the experiences of all young people and opening their eyes to new possibilities. Jen is passionate about gender equality and especially women in STEM and as such is secretary of the regional Womens in Science nd Engineering (WISE) campaign which looks to address this issue.
Jen is a trained facilitator and leads the majority of the training courses on offer to our STEM Ambassadors and North East Ambition clients. Workshops include "How to work with primary and secondary schools", "Mentoring support", "Working with non-school groups", "Effective communication at large scale careers events" and "How to successfully work with young peple, teachers and schools". As an experienced facilitator and trainer, Jen understands the importance of bringing out the skills held by individuals and supporting them to develop in a more structured and practical fashion.
Jen has been with RTC for four years, initially working on the STEM Ambassador programme and particularly concentrating on building relationship with schools and teachers to help them get the most out of the programme. Using her own teaching background and experience in the classroom Jen holds a unique position in the team and fully understands what schools need in relation to working with STEM Ambassadors. Understanding fully the constraints and challenges facing teachers. Jen therefore can support businesses and schools to get the most out of collaborative working, to overcome the barriers.
Over the last year, Jen has moved into the role of project manager for the North East Ambition programme and, in particular, has worked with businesses to support them to achieve as much benefit as possibe from working with young people and schools. Working with young people can often be seen as a 'nice to have' for companies, but the long term benefits to the business can be huge and it can be a low cost route to maximum impact for themselves, young people and the region as a whole. The North East Ambition programme is designed to allow businesses to build their brand in their community, support their corporate responsibility strategy and secure a pipeline of talent for the business.
