There are a whole host of different ways you can get involved and play your part in shaping the regions future workforce. Find out how some of our Ambasadors have achieved this.
Steve Markham – STM Quality Limited
Steve has his own business delivering quality engineering and management to the automotive sector. He has been a STEM Ambassador since March 2019 and has already received our ‘100 Hours of Engagement’ award. Steve has delivered a wide range of STEM activities including careers speed dating, mock interviews, recording a 2minute video of his career path, masterclasses, network meetings with ambassadors and teachers, mentoring, guess my job talks and many more.
Ian Green - Global Training Centre and Nissan Skills Foundation
Ian is a Senior Training Controller for Global Training Centre and Nissan Skills Foundation. During his time as a STEM Ambassador, Ian has recorded an amazing 1262 hours since his first activity in Dec 2017, the most hours recorded by any STEM Ambassador in the North East. As well as delivering a number of STEM activities through Nissan, Ian also volunteers in his own time.
Some of the STEM activities that Ian has been involved in include F1 in schools, Vex and Lego Robotic Challenges, Airgineers and Industrial Cadets to name a few. Ian has received many awards for the work he does with young people, including a nomination by the STEM Ambassador Hub for a STEM Inspiration Award for which he was shortlisted and enjoyed a trip to the House of Lords to celebrate.
Paula McMahon - Sir Robert McAlpine
Paula is a Regional Supervising Officer for Sir Robert McAlpine. During her time as a STEM Ambassador, Paula has recorded over 1000 volunteering hours. She has delivered a variety of STEM activities which include attending many Careers Fairs, 'Guess My Job talks' remote activities for recycle week, climate change and even worked with the scouts and guides.
Since lockdown, Paula has adapted really well to continue to support students, by delivering over 60 online STEM sessions.
Amit Kumar – Cummins INC
Amit is a Technical Adviser for Cummins INC. During his time as a STEM Ambassador, Amit has recorded over 300 volunteering hours. Amit is the person to go to if you are interested in the Greenpower projects and is a great advocate for the programme, encouraging his colleagues within Cummins to also sign up as STEM Ambassadors. He has delivered a variety of STEM activities including Meet the Engineer, various Greenpower Goblin projects and attended a number of festivals throughout the year.
Dani Walsh – BorgWarner
Dani is a Cyber Security Manager for BorgWarner, Gateshead. During her time as a STEM Ambassador, Dani has recorded nearly 400 volunteering hours. She has delivered a wide variety of STEM activities including Work Discovery Week, Motor Exhibits, Exploration Days and countless Coderdojo activities.
Leanne Stewart – Johnson Matthey
Leanne is a highly motivated and passionate Chartered Chemist with experience in both the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and is currently working for Johnson Matthey. Since becoming a STEM Ambassador in 2017, Leanne has been very proactive and logged a whopping 28 activities during 2020 (not easy during a global pandemic) which have included year 1 & 4 homework activity, looking at nutrition and maths with weights, measurements and problem solving. She has also delivered hands on practical science experiments and many hours of mentoring.
Nisreen graduated as a dental surgeon with an honours degree in 2003 from the faculty of dentistry, Yemen and then went on to complete her masters degree and PHD at the University of Malaya, Malaysia.
Now living in England, Nisreen joined our STEM Ambassador programme in February 2020 and changed her delivery of STEM activitie quickly to adapt to the new way of learning when covid hit, delivering many of her STEM activities online, including science demonstrations /experiments, virtual careers fairs, mentoring and training. Nisreen was also involved in our Camp @ home event and has delivered a fantastic 21 STEM activities since February 2020 with 122 volunteer hours.
Helen Smith - GSK
Helen is the early talent and apprentice lead for GSK at Barnard Castle and has been a STEM ambassador since 2018. She adapted well during 2020 to ensure students were still able to access her support, by delivered many online STEM activities, such as Mock Interviews, career and apprenticeship talks, careers fairs and interview techniques working with many schools and universities. Helen not only delivers STEM activities but she also heads up a team of STEM ambassadors within GSK, helping to empower her colleagues and help them to reach and inspire even more young poeple across our region.
