North East STEM Hub hits Tees Valley

16 June 2021

As part of a Primary Careers Education pilot launched recently by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority, the North East STEM Hub have developed some great opportunities for schools in the Tees Valley Area.

Take a look at our flyer here and  the exciting opportunities listed below:

Mentoring and Buddy Programme

We are offering your primary school a unique Mentoring and Buddy programme for year 4/5  students per school. Primary pupils will work closely with a mentor from industry to develop skills, broaden their horizons, enhance their confidence, and learn about the world of work.  Delivered as group mentoring, Year 4/5 students will also experience peer to peer support from older trained year 6 children who will act as STEM buddies to challenge perceptions of STEM subjects and careers. Older children/buddies will become Junior STEM Ambassadors and will support STEM related activities within the school and support their assigned mentee group.

This is open for primary schools in the Tees Valley area and will run from September 2021 to July 2022.

Would your school like to access KS1 books that inspire your teachers and students to enjoy STEM through stories? Delivered as book loan kits this resource introduces science ideas and vocabulary to young children and can be enjoyed by the whole classroom at story time. Books include a diverse group of main characters, including female and BAME protagonists to inspire the next Interstellar Cinderella. Texts can link to the curriculum as well as topic linked ideas such as making owl ice cream (Science/Food – Gruffalo), building a tower (D&T – Iggy Pek Architect, or programming a caterpillar (Computing/Maths - The very Hungry Caterpillar). Teachers will be provided with a free online professional development session on how to effectively use the book box, ideas for delivery and how to get the most out of the resource.

These are available to schools within the Tees Valley area and can be loaned for up to a 6-week period.
