Being a STEM Ambassador

Not only does this experience make a positive contribution to my personal and professional development goals but it’s a chance to share my enthusiasm for STEM and inspire young people! It’s an opportunity to give something back to the community, and to develop SUEZ’s links with schools and other community partners. It allows students to chat to a STEM professional like myself who has experienced first-hand the entry route into the career, whether that be a university or an apprenticeship.

Being a STEM Ambassador is an honour and privilege. Working with young people through STEM workshops has enabled me to share my knowledge and passion for the North East’s engineering heritage and use it to inspire the next generation of future engineers.

To date, my STEM Ambassador journey has been jam-packed. From building Goblin Cars with Greenpower to grading Primary Engineer awards to running workshops on mighty women in engineering!

Feedback from Zetland Primary School

Ben Sickling, Principal Engineer at Sweco has completed a nine-week STEM project, working with children from Zetland Primary School in Redcar.

The school has provided the following feedback on Ben's work with the pupils. I enter each session with real anticipation and curiosity, as I never know what they will want to talk about.

Pharmaceutical Industry

My historical and successful 10 year career as a research scientist within the Pharmaceutical Industry began with a practical based trainee placement year, which was undertaken as part of my degree qualification. I therefore firmly believe practical experience holds a powerful key to employability and being a STEM Ambassador allows me to provide exciting practical learning opportunities to young people of a variety of ages. In my current role, as a Science Technician within Secondary Education, I offer weekly after-school STEM Club sessions ...

It has been an absolute pleasure to be involved with Year of Engineering talking about STEM careers - thank you to all of the schools and organisations that have asked me to take part. I hope that in my own small way I have inspired a few young people to pursue careers in STEM and encouraged a few other business colleagues to come on-board as STEM Ambassadors.

As just a snapshot of my activities…

I was interviewed by Mark Lane for his article on “Why the STEM agenda is so important to our North East...

The Ambassador Programme (and RTC!)

The Ambassador Programme (and RTC!)

  • I have been a STEM Ambassador since 2005 and compared to the early days, the programme in the North East is now  a mature and very supportive framework of dedicated and enthusiastic administrators all helping the STEM Ambassadors like me, link up effectively and efficiently with schools and organisations and hence their students.
  • I get to know about what teachers want and can hopefully provide some teachers and students with a fun insi...
